Begin the Journey of Intercession
Critical to InterVarsity's 2030 Calling is a renewed dependence on God and others through the power of a team of intercessors.
Is your team ready? Sign up for training and send them this information.
You are invited to engage a team of intercessors.
EXODUS 17:11-12
"Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. (When) Moses' hands grew weary...Aaron and Hur held up his hands...So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun"
We need our own Moseses, Aarons and Hurs- our intercessors- with us to help us. Our vision is for every staff in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to have a team of four intercessors.
Building an Intercession Team
What do I do?
Pray
- Pray for the Lord to guide you in the process and help you put together your team.
- Pray the Lord will find Intercessors who especially find prayer a joy. The intercessors you are considering inviting need to be trustworthy and faithful.
- Intercessors need to be people with whom you can share transparently, knowing they will take it only to the Lord.
- Intercessors are filled with faith, they believe in Jesus, you and your ministry.
Discern
Here are 2 possible ways to discern those whom God might be raising up to be part of your team.
- Draw from your prayer letter: Sit with and pray over your prayer letter list and ask the Lord to highlight certain names. Consider people who have told you they are praying for you or who have previously given you words, scriptures or promises from the Lord.
- Host a prayer meeting: Invite selected men and women- see who comes, who is energized, and is moved to pray for your ministry.
Invite
- First, you can send them this information for Intercessors page. If they are interested meet with them (online, phone, or safely in-person) to share your vision of building an intercession team: Will you commit to pray for me and my ministry as part of a small team monthly for the next year? You'll be equipped with resources and training from our National Intercessor team.
- Encourage them to pray about whether they feel called to this ask, emphasizing that they have total freedom in this decision and about the program.
Identify a Leader
When you know who is saying "yes," discern and invite a leader for the group. They will need to commit to:
- organizing others and keeping them on track
- spiritually encouraging the team
- communicating with the team
They should be:
- someone who you feel safe with
- an experienced intercessor and a very mature believer
Training
- Orientation Training
Once your team assembles, you and your team will join a 60-minute online training session offered by the National Intercession Team. We will provide training materials and talk through their role. They will also be invited to Prayer Summits to continue growth as intercessors. At the end of training, we will have you intentionally bless and commission your team into this work.
- How to get training
Fill out this form and note a few days or times to send to your team as potential training times. (We recommend Doodle which is a free service that allows people in a group to vote on times that work for them.)
Contact the National Intercession Team at national.intercessors@intervarsity.org for any questions or comments. We're looking forward to what the Lord will do through you and your intercessors!
